ALTERED LIGHT: WINDOWS FROM THE PLAYA
A Solo Exhibition by Looking Up Arts | November 6 - November 15, 2026
Friday, November 6 | 6PM - 9PM - Opening Reception
From the Playa to the Gallery
Originally created for Burning Man 2026, Altered Light: Windows from the Playa brings the luminous beauty of the desert into the heart of San Francisco.
UNBOUND is excited to present a solo exhibition by Looking Up Arts, featuring illuminated, stained glass-inspired acrylic panels from Confessional Alter: Demoop du Soul, an interactive installation that debuted at Burning Man.
Created using precision laser-cutting techniques, vibrant acrylic, and LED illumination, these intricate windows combine traditional stained-glass aesthetics with modern digital fabrication.
On the playa, the windows were part of an altar-shaped circus wagon designed as a space for confession, reflection, vulnerability, and human connection. Glowing against the desert night, they invited visitors to pause, interact, and explore their inner worlds.
Now, removed from their original environment and presented as standalone artworks, the panels take on a new life. Their rich colors, organic patterns, and interplay of light and geometry invite a closer look at the relationship between technology, craftsmanship, and artistic expression.

Encaustic on Paper Workshop
An encaustic on paper workshop is an art class where you learn to paint using heated beeswax mixed with colored pigments on paper, instead of traditional painting techniques like oil, acrylic, or watercolor.
Encaustic, meaning “to burn in,” is an ancient painting technique that dates back more than 2,000 years and creates artwork with rich colors, textures, and a soft, luminous, layered appearance.
In this workshop, you will:
Apply colored wax: Using brushes or other tools to spread melted wax onto paper.
Creating layers: Building colors, patterns, and textures.
Experimenting with techniques: Scraping, scratching, blending, adding oil sticks and crayon for depth.
Making your own artwork: Creating multiple finished pieces to take home.
Encaustic on paper is a fabulous way to create something as small as a textured bookmark, a card to write home on, or a larger work of art. Beware, once you start, you won’t want to stop!
About the Leading Artist
Natalie Dunnege
San Francisco, CA
“My artwork is largely inspired by organic materials and the textures found in nature. I experiment with ingredients that will give me enough bulk to sculpt and carve layers in the surface of the paint, creating depth and dimension, and I complete final details at the end with a small brush. The amount of materials used in the layering process can result in a textured painting weighing significantly heavier than a traditional painting, making it take upwards of a year to dry. While organic materials inspire the physical textures of my work, my abstract paintings also use color to express personal emotions and lived experiences.
Drawing on my Master's degree in Psychology, I became interested in how contemporary psychologists associate color with emotional responses. Regardless of the scientific validity, I have found color to work as a tool for exploring and processing my own emotions. The texture of my work describes the physical world, and the color holds the emotional state.
In 2022, I branched out into the world of encaustic painting, taking my first workshop in the Bay Area and then another, leading me to create my own encaustic studio at home. Encaustic painting opened up a new universe of how I could leverage color and texture while painting”
